FAQs
What is the best age to start Dog Training?
You can start private lessons and clicker training your puppy with us as young as 8 weeks and group classes as early as 10 weeks as long as it is current on vaccines (vaccines do not have to be complete, but they must be and remain current/up to date.)
My dog is eight years old, is it too late to train him?
No. It is never too late to train your dog. While it is easiest to start your puppy off at a young age, your dog is never too old to learn new things!
Can my spouse and children attend class with me?
Yes. There are some exercises that multiple handlers can participate in but also some exercises where only 1 person per dog is allowed on the floor to train. Other family members will be required to take a seat on the sidelines. Children are welcome but are your responsibility and must be able to sit quietly on the sidelines when needed.
What do I need to bring to class? Where can I purchase these items?
6’ leather leash
Basic collar around the neck
Clicker
Great treats
A hungry dog !
* No breakfast the morning of your lesson or class. Bring a variety of treats including basic kibble, soft dog treats, white string cheese sticks and plain boiled chicken. If your dog likes toys, bring a favorite toy along. We have community water bowls but you may prefer to bring your own bowl and water from home. You’ll need a basic collar around the neck, not a harness, not a head halter, not an electric fence collar, not a gps collar. If your dog wears a seat belt while traveling in the car, please remove it and leave it in the car. A 6’ leather leash and a clicker. We have everything you need for sale here or you’re welcome to pick it up elsewhere and bring it along. If you have other training collars feel free to bring those along as well. You’ll also want to have a 6’ nylon leash that your dog can drag at home. We do not sell nylon leashes here. You may likely already have one. If not, you can pick one up at most local pet stores.
*Note: Be sure you aren’t “free feeding” your dog, meaning do not leave food down at all times for grazing. Feed 1-2 meals per day instead. Pick the bowl up and remove it after after a maximum of 15 minutes even if your dog did not finish all of the food. If you have been free feeding, make sure you’ve switched to meals at least a week before your scheduled lesson. If your dog has free access to unlimited food it’s often difficult to find a motivator it’s willing to work for.
Should I feed my dog before coming to class?
No. Do not feed your dog before you come to class!
What should I wear to class? Is there a place to change if I am coming from work?
It’s best to wear comfortable casual/athletic type clothing and tennis shoes. Please do not wear sandals, flip flops or clogs (open toed or open heeled shoes). Minimal running and backing up are a part of the class and these type shoes can be hazardous. Athletic shoes are best. If you’re coming from work we have an indoor restroom you can use to change.
Is there food or vending available during training classes?
No. We do not have food or drinks for sale but you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks.
Where should I park if my dog is enrolled in a beginner obedience group class?
Beginners please park on the left-hand side of the training building. This allows for the most efficient traffic flow as beginning students are exiting and advanced students are arriving.
Where should I park if my dog is enrolled in an advanced class?
Advanced students please park on the right hand side of the training building. This allows for the most efficient traffic flow as beginning students are exiting and advanced students are arriving.
Where should I park if I’m coming for a private lesson?
Please park on the right hand side of the building if you are coming for a private lesson.
Should I take the first or second blacktop driveway to get to the training building?
You’ll want to take the second blacktop drive to reach the training building. Do not take the first blacktop drive by the lake that goes to the residence.
Where is the best place to walk my dog?
Flying Feet is located on a beautiful setting of 40 sprawling acres. You are welcome to walk your dog in any of the grassy areas. We just ask that you please do not allow your dogs to urinate on the building or in the landscaped area. Please pick up after your dog.
Do I need to pick up after my dog if it poops outside of the building in the grass?
Yes! There is are green mailboxes located on each side of the building. Open the mailbox and slide the tray out to retrieve a plastic bag. Place your hand in the bag, pick up your dogs waste and tie off the bag. Deposit the bag in the orange 5 gallon bucket located next to the door by the entrance to the building. Do not bring dog wash inside the building.
What do I do if my dog has an accident inside the building?
It is your responsibility to clean up after your dog. Solid waste must be cleaned up with a bag and placed in the outdoor receptical. There are wipes, paper towels and cleaning spray located on the brown table.
